Cycling amongst basil and sage

Herb-themed bike routes for all the senses in Salzburg’s Seenland

Maybe it’s the contemplativeness of cycling that creates an almost intimate relationship with nature. Sun, smells, speed, sounds, and visual impressions come together to create an outdoor experience for all senses. On a bike path, the journey becomes the reward – and this is especially true in the Trumer Seenland.

A cycling tour through the lake region in SalzburgerLand is a feast for your eyes, nose, and taste buds. Cyclists can explore local herb gardens along specially signed routes. The elements provide an adventurous setting for the “cycling experience” in the region known for its organic hay farming. Four lakes, the Wallersee, Mattsee, Grabensee, and Obertrumer See hold fresh water, and fragrant air follows you on the road. The soft earth of the Trumer region, of course, is where its herbs and spices grow.

On an aromatic journey of discovery

Salzburg’s lake region is home to sustainable and environmentally-friendly hay farming. Its people developed a love for nature in all its forms. This shows in their knowledge of the centuries-old plants with a spicy taste or soothing and healing properties: herbs. Many different wild and culinary herbs are lovingly cultivated in traditional cottage gardens, or in modern spiral and raised beds. Tart sage and tangy basil give you a warm welcome. One aromatic spot after another makes cycling on the herb-themed paths particularly fun and flavorful.

Cycling Between Sage and Basil

The bike routes take you through the rolling landscape past meadows, forests, and lakes. In each community in the lake region a different collection of herbs entices you. There is even a herb quiz for kids to get them away from their video games and out into nature. “World of Herbs” is the name of this clever initiative that collects and shares valuable knowledge about herbs.

Cottage gardens and raised-bed plantings

Aromatic and bitter substances, vitamins, and essential oils are what make herbs so valuable for cooking, cosmetics, and alternative healing methods. It is exciting to explore the different varieties through their scent and appearance. Spicy marjoram is waiting for the next goulash to be stirred up, fruity mint longs for cocktails, and aromatic rosemary wants to be paired with roasts. They are all competing for the best spots in the sun and try to outdo each other with their scents.
The individual herb stations that the cycling routes pass through are unique and diverse – from the Trumer herb garden by Gasthof Sigl and the creative garden in Mattsee, to the Seelenbräu garden in Köstendorf and the cottage garden in Seeham. There are a variety of bike routes that cross these communities with their aromatic herbal treasures.

A hunger for cycling and culinary pleasures

It’s not surprising that cycling and exploring the world of herbs make you work up an appetite. And besides, how are all these plants used in local kitchens? Find out by sampling the fare in one of the area’s many traditional inns. Make sure to try the fresh caught fish from one of the surrounding lakes.

Anyone who wants to keep their inspiration after such an aromatic day of cycling and studying herbs will know: lavender improves your mood, basil stimulates your mental sharpness, and chives ward off against fatigue. That last one is important, since the next cycling tour is around the corner.
